Whether To Buy A Graphics Tablet With Stylus Or Pen Mouse, And What's The Difference?
|
There are a multitude of tools and accessories for every computer system these days. Even in the artist niche, there are several solutions for the same problem. You might have discovered that in addition to graphics tablets that have a stylus, mouse, and airbrush options, there's also a pen mouse device built by Salient called the V-Mouse. Unlike graphics tablets, the pen mouse doesn't need any specific platform in order to function, and you can even use it directly on a sheet of paper or even your leg! Is it a valid replacement for a digitizer though? Let's take a closer look... The Salient V-mouse is shaped like a bulky, but ergonomically form-fitting pen that is comfortable to hold. At a cost of only $30-60 depending upon size and wireless options it's certainly a more economical solution. However, there is no pressure sensitivity, and since it functions like a standard mouse the sensitivity of control isn't to as fine a detail as you would have with a digital drawing pad. However if you're not looking for a professional drawing tool, this device is a fiine option for presentations and even for having finer control than you would have with a standard mouse. It's an excellent device for travel and portability as well. However if you're really looking to get your draw on, there's no replacement for a good tablet. If you're concerned about portability, then the Wacom Bamboo Mini or the small DigiPro are a good bet. If you're concerned enough about cost that you're not willing to spend even the $150-200 for an Adesso or Genius brand tablet then you probably don't have the design need for a drawing pad anyway and are better off waiting or getting the V-Mouse instead. If you want to find out more about the Salient V-Mouse there is plenty of information on their website. If you want to find out more about the various brands that I just mentioned, I've written reviews and comparisons on this site.
