7 Tips For Tablet Pen Drawing- Part 2

4. Use felt nibs for that old school feel

That's right, you can repplace the standard plastic nib on your stylus with a felt nib. This gives that little bit of extra friction you need to gain a finer, more natural control over your work. At the time of the writing of this article, Wacom is selling 5-packs of these felt nibs for about $5. If you decide to go with another brand and this issue is important to you, then you might be able to jury-rig a solution with a real felt tip, but I haven't tried this myself. Let me know if create a useful invention for other tablets!

5. Use the pressure brush tool in Adobe CS

This is one of the most useful and obvious tips and probably should have been listed first if not for its specificity. When using Adobe Photoshop for Windows or Mac OSX, be sure to change your brush settings to have pressure control. To do this, simply select the brush you want to use, open up the brushes window pallette, select control and change the option to pressure. You can now use your tablet pen to its full effect, and by changing more advanced options not only the pressure, but also the direction and angle of your stroke can change the effect of various jitter settings.

6. Vectors, vectors, vectors!

At first, you might find difficulty getting the precise control you're used to with a standard drawing pen. By using vectors in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, or other programs that allow vector drawing, you can adjust whatever lines you make afterwards by pulling on the curves and handles. This allows you to get the general shape or sketch of the design and then adjust it accordingly to a fine detail.

7. Kiss your mouse goodbye!

Maybe this one goes without saying, but once you get used to tablet pen drawing, your mouse will start collecting dust. The amount of control and detail you can gain control of with a digitizer stylus is addicting. Even now, I find myself web surfing with my tablet pen instead of the mouse. I haven't bought a new mouse recently because I know that I'll be using my stylus instead most of the time anyway. This annoys my friends somewhat when they want to use my computer, but I've been doing a pretty good job of making them converts to the tabletting ways.

There are many other minute pointers that I could have listed here, but major ones should get you started off on the right foot. Remember, these tips are applicable to any brand of tablet, from Adesso to Genius to Wacom, so no matter which you own or buy you should get ramped up in no time.
