Mouse Tablet

What is a painter without her paintbrushes? Let's face it, you need the right tools for the job. If you're any sort of designer or artist working in the digital world, I don't see how it's possible to get by without a mouse tablet. What's a mouse tablet? They go by many names, including a graphic drawing tablet, a digitizer pad, and by brand specific names such as a Pensketch or a Cybertablet.

A mouse tablet is an input device that differs from a mouse in that the tablet determines the position of the cursor instead of the pointing device (i.e. the mouse). What this means is that any number of pointing devices can be integrated with it, including a mouse, a pen stylus, or even an airbrush. The tablet also determines the pressure being applied to it, and this increases the functionality available.

Depending upon your needs, there are many brands and features from which to choose. Brands include but aren't limited to the popular Wacom lines such as Bamboo, Intuos and Graphire, while other brands such as Genius, Kohjinsha, Adesso and DigiPro fill in for users looking for a lower end entry point. These tablets drawing areas range in common sizes from 4" x 5" up to 9" x 12", but larger sizes are available for more serious draftsmen. Keep in mind before purchasing that the actual size of the tablet can be as much as half a foot larger than the drawing size. For this reason, the smaller sizes are more popular for home office use. Before purchasing you should also take into consideration the aspect ratio of your monitor (is it standard or wide-screen?) as there are now wider tablets available to match your needs.most

One thing that I will only be able to discuss here are factors such as ergonomics and repetitive stress injuries. I will discuss in another article ways that you can set up your office environment so that you can find the most comfortable working position, hoever you will probably need to take it upon yourself to try out different graphics tablets and find out whic mouse and stylus are the most comfortable for you. Whether you purchase from a specialty eleectronics store or an online retailer, most will have adequate return policies so that you may try a product and then exchange it for another if it doesn't quite suit your needs.
